Little Things Like Us

In a big world it can be difficult to feel important. That lack of importance can lead to self-doubt and self-loathing. Social media doesn’t help matters either, between online bullying and inevitable self-comparison joy gets crushed. Internalized insignificance is a poison many of us drink. Everyday we see others who are losing more weight, making more money, living their dreams or just seem happier.

During our breaks from life we scroll through our socials and fall deeper into the trap. The trap that we are too small to make a difference, too unsuccessful to matter. Eventually depression walks its way into our home. Invading our everyday life, ruining moments, and scarring our self-esteem. You wake up and look at the world and feel like it wouldn’t miss you. The news is never good and you cant do anything about it. How can I make a difference? I’m not smart enough, I’m too ugly for people to pay attention, I have made far too many mistakes to make a difference now. This fight has killed many people over the years, some to suicide and some who just gave up on themselves. A devastating loss every time. Every person who has lost this fight deserved more. Every victim of this attack on their psyche is sorely missed. The world is so vast and so big. In it you might think you are too small to matter but I assure you, you are wrong.

The world is comprised of 326 million trillion gallons of water. A number neither I the author nor you the reader can truly comprehend. Too vast for our own understanding and yet we find purpose in our daily lives with significantly smaller gallons of water.

The average person uses 33 gallons of water a day. 33 gallons seems comparably insignificant. Yet we need it to function everyday. You probably never knew how many gallons of water are in the world. You may have never heard how much water you use daily but you do know how important water is to your life. It is in the very air we breathe. Your body is 60 percent water. Your organs are largely made of water. Your body needs water to maintain its very life.

A gallon of water doesn’t seem like much. Loads of health nuts drink that everyday. You can go to a grocery store and see aisles filled with gallons of water. When we bathe on average we are using 45 gallons of water. The average washer uses 15-20 gallons per load. To the vastness of the world a gallon of water is unnoticeable but to an individual that makes a difference in our day. You may feel like just a drop of water in this world but It takes 75,708 drops of water to form a single gallon.

Every drop of water is small. Every drop of water is unnoticeable within the vastness of the water on earth. Yet every single drop of water is necessary to sustain life on this planet. Every drop is purposeful. Every drop is important. When you hold a gallon of water you cant see it as anything but a gallon but whether you see it or not there are 75,708 drops of water there. They don’t need to be seen as individual drops to matter to you.

You are like a drop of water and so am I. Together we form gallons, together we find purpose. No one asks for a drop of water but a drop of water is vital to everyone. You are small, you are little and so am I. The truth of the world is that it is only vast because it is comprised of billions of little things like us. Every meadow is made up of countless blades of grass. The shore of every beach is made up of an unfathomable number of grains of sand. There are close to 8 billion people on earth yet every parent knows the power of one more person. I love the fact that I am little in this world and you should too because this vast world is made up of countless of little things like us.

So when you are feeling little remind yourself that little matters. That little has purpose. That little is necessary. Little is beautiful. Little was God’s plan all along. You are not insignificant, you matter. You would be missed. God made you with a purpose and on purpose. When times come as they always do, where you feel helpless, find God. He is always looking for you. You may be one drop in a gallon but he knows you. He doesn’t make mistakes and he made you, that’s no mistake. When he finished making you he smiled and said “perfect!” not because you were going to live life without wrongdoing or mistakes but because he loves you. To the world you are small but to him you are significant and treasured. Love your little self today and every day hereafter.
